This project was for a military client in La Jolla who was expecting their baby just 3 months later. They were moved to the front of the list to get their design completed, and then their yard was scheduled for construction shortly after and was completely finished in a month and a half.
They had a mid-size front yard and a large backyard, all of which was fairly simplified with everything being demolished and starting with a blank canvas. Also the clients were really easy going and trusted us both (designer and builder) to do our magic which has been found to always have had better results compared to when the client tries to intervene extensively and assert too much control.
The project was fully completed and their baby came home with them just 2 days later after final completion so it was perfect timing.
The front yard included a large dry river bed, a few colorful trees and drought tolerant plantings with a privacy hedge on the edge of their driveway along with (3) new retaining wall planters.
For the backyard, a new modern style open wood patio cover was installed over a newly designed paver patio with 18” square steppers off the patio that lead into a planter area around (3) new fruit trees (lemon, lime and avocado) for them to be able to walk around easily and pick fruits. The clients added some stylish patio furniture and a perfect sized rectangular fire-table to their patio. Additionally, a large soft curvilinear grass area contained by new seat height retaining wall planters that span the entire West side, a large pebble area on the North side for a future play structure area or a potential ADU, and a nice colorful variety of brand new drought tolerant plantings all flow really elegantly with this project.
A few of the plantings that were used were Tipu, Crape Myrtle & Eastern Redbud trees, Iceberg roses, Apricot Queen Flax, Blue Hibiscus, Euryops, Wood Ferns and Cranesbill geraniums for a kid & pet safe landscape (completely non-toxic plantings).
The clients are extremely grateful and it was a pleasure working with them in creating their new beautiful and peaceful yard right in time to welcome their new baby home.
As with all projects, starting with a successful design is key to a beautiful outcome. Reach out if you would like to discuss starting on your new design plans.
