'The Butterfly Painting' in Solana Beach

This project was for a client in Solana Beach who wanted an avant-garde / Dr. Seuss / art showcase / succulent painting type of landscape design for her North-facing fenced front yard. She hired me for a same-day sketch service that extended over a few weeks. She was very open to creative ideas (my favorite type of client), and what came through was this blooming butterfly form with one of its wings as a succulent painting including an arc of colored glass.

The rest of the design revolved around finding the right shade and partial-sun plants to accentuate the succulent painting and what was already on site, including the meandering dry river bed, flagstone steppers, large ficus trees in the center, and the privacy hedge along the East side property line.
