This project was for a military client in La Jolla expecting their baby just three months later. They were moved to the front of the list to get their design completed, and the yard was scheduled for construction shortly after and finished in a month and a half.
They had a mid-size front yard and a large backyard, all of which was simplified by demolishing everything and starting with a blank canvas. The clients were easy-going and trusted both designer and builder to do our magic, which always has better results than when clients try to intervene extensively. The project was fully completed and their baby came home just two days after final completion, so the timing was perfect.
The front yard included a large dry river bed, colorful trees, drought-tolerant plantings, a privacy hedge, and three new retaining-wall planters. The backyard got a modern open wood patio cover over a new paver patio, 18" square steppers leading into a planter area around three new fruit trees (lemon, lime, avocado) for easy fruit-picking, a fire-table, a soft curvilinear grass area contained by seat-height retaining-wall planters, and a large pebble area for a future play structure or ADU. Plantings included Tipu, Crape Myrtle, Eastern Redbud, Iceberg roses, Apricot Queen Flax, Blue Hibiscus, Euryops, Wood Ferns, and Cranesbill geraniums, all kid- and pet-safe (completely non-toxic).
